NSCC WIRELESS ACCESS - STUDENT GUIDELINES

FALL SEMESTER 2008

The Computer Services Division of Nashville State Community College has deployed wireless router access points in the following locations.

K-102 - Student Lounge Area
Lobby Library
Library Atrium
C-209
C-300 LOBBY
A LOBBY - A Building near Security

The access points are a direct connection to the Internet using SPRINT as the carrier and Internet Service Provider. The Wireless Routers broadcast their locations, but do require a Security Access Key to access the router. This password will change each semester.

The routers will only accept the 802.11G standard data rate, 802.11B,A, and N are not supported at this time.

The Security Access Key provides positive security encryption to the wireless transmissions and limits access to the router.

The Key for the next Semester will be (lowercase) nscc08f082508.

The Computer Services Help Desk will make the current access key available if there are any questions about the current key.

Please note that access is limited to 25 active users per router. Further NSCC makes no guarantees, real or implied, concerning service, security of data, data rates, bandwidth, or quality of services. Wireless 802.11G is by design and specification a public channel. NSCC will verify if wireless services are operational under normal conditions. If a SPRINT problem is detected, the carrier will be notified as soon as practical, but no time frame for restoration of service can be made.

Under no circumstances will laptops or wireless devices which are not property of NSCC or the State of Tennessee, be configured, set up, or otherwise managed.

Failure to connect through the SPRINT network, once the operation of the local routers is verified, is the full responsibility of the owner of the device(s) attempting to connect using the current Security Access Key. NSCC personnel will not make any attempt to fix a problem on a non-NSCC device. Devices containing offending software, spyware, etc, or creating network problems, may be blocked by NSCC or SPRINT management at any time without prior warning.

Each student, faculty, or staff member signs an “Acceptable Use Policy” for NSCC equipment. This policy applies to use of the wireless services on campus. Visitors or Guests should sign a copy of this policy before using NSCC services, but the policy guidelines remain in force for their use of NSCC services even if no use policy has been signed.
